* No city sales tax of its own. CDTFA's notice doesn't list these 25 cities by name. It says the countywide rate "applies within the unincorporated area of the listed county and within any incorporated city within the county that does not impose a district tax," so they use code D29. Confirm your code with CDTFA.

N/A: CDTFA lists no code of its own for this city before October 1.

FAQ

Common questions

When does the new LA County sales tax rate start?

Thursday, October 1, 2026. Measure ER, approved by voters on June 2, 2026, adds a new 0.5% countywide tax from that date. Every city and unincorporated area in Los Angeles County gets a higher rate and a new CDTFA tax area code.

What is the sales tax rate in Los Angeles County after October 1, 2026?

10.25% countywide, up from 9.75%. That rate applies in unincorporated areas and in the 25 cities with no city sales tax of their own. Cities with their own tax run from 10.75% to 11.75%. Lancaster and Palmdale are highest at 11.75%.

What is the sales tax rate in the City of Los Angeles from October 1, 2026?

10.25%, up from 9.75%. The City of Los Angeles has no city sales tax of its own, so it uses the countywide rate. Its code comes from CDTFA's countywide row, D29, because CDTFA's notice doesn't list the city by name. Confirm your code with CDTFA.

Why did my city's rate go up by more than 0.5%?

In 8 cities a city tax also starts or rises on October 1: Calabasas and San Marino (+1.50), Temple City (+1.25), El Segundo (+1.00), and Bell Gardens, Commerce, Covina and Gardena (+0.75). Every other place rises by 0.5%.

What is the new CDTFA tax area code for my city?

Every place in LA County gets a new code on October 1. CDTFA says "a new code is required." Find yours in the table above. The 25 cities with no city tax of their own use the countywide code, D29. Confirm your code with CDTFA.

Do I need to change the tax rate in my register?

If you set the rate by hand, yes: change it for sales from October 1. If your system updates rates for you, check one receipt from October 1 or later to confirm it did. The receipt check on this page does the math.

How do I confirm the rate for my exact address?

Use CDTFA's address lookup at maps.cdtfa.ca.gov. It shows the new rates from October 1, 2026. Rates follow city limits, not ZIP codes, so an address with a city's name can be unincorporated. You can also call CDTFA at 1-800-400-7115 (TTY 711).

What is Measure ER?

A Los Angeles County measure approved by voters on June 2, 2026. It adds a new 0.5% countywide sales tax from October 1, 2026, which takes the countywide rate from 9.75% to 10.25%.

I charged the old rate after October 1. What should I do?

Update the rate in your register first. For sales already made at the old rate, call CDTFA at 1-800-400-7115 or ask your tax preparer what to do. This page shows CDTFA's rates; it can't tell you what your business owes.
